ANSWER TO THE LETTER OF LEONARDO

Leonardo’nun çizimleri, tersten yazılmış yazısıyla sayfalar tutan notları, mekanik dişliler, ışıklandırdığı tiyatro sahnesi ve koltukları, duvardaki halılar, tablolar: her şey meraklılarca izleniyordu. Dudaklarındaki her sözcük acıyan bal damlalarıydı sanki.
BAL ACISI
Meydan okuyarak zamana Tanrıya ve aşka
Bir palet toprağın gizemin Çivilemişsin tuvaline
Özleştirip bakışınla
Bakışın ki
Kısaltır özge aşkları
Sokar dergâhına
Secde ettirir
Varılmaz uzaklıktır bakışın
Çöreklenmiş alaycı bir gülüş
Dudaklarının hayın kıvrımına
İkiyüzlü
Küçümseyici
Ve sevdalı
Belli etmesen de üşüyorsun belli
Al omzuna harmaniyeni ellerinle
Ellerin ki dokur zamanın tezgâhında Aşkın bin türlüsünü
İnceliğin ve hüznün bin türlüsünü
Ufkun sisli ve alıngan
Hiç doğmuyor güneşler
Hiç doğmayacak
Sanki zaman
Hep Ortaçağ
Sonra büyük göç kuzeye
Yüce dağlardan aşarken yüreğinde
Deniz tutması gibi bir esriklik
Ve ayrılıkların buruk tadı
Hüzünle seyretmiştin üzüncün yurdunu
Acı bir damla gözyaşı olmuşsun
Kimi iklimlerde
Kimi yerde masallara girmişsin
Geceler kadar gizli anlamlara
Öpüşler gibi sinmişsin
Ve sen bir tülün düşsel gerisinde
Düşsel kalacak olan yaşlanmadan
Kalımlı sevgiliymişsin
Derler ki hâlâ o düş ülkelerinde
Bal acısı imişsin
Acıdır çünkü dağlardan gelen bal
Acıdır ayrılıkların tadı
Sen şimdi burkulmuş yüreğinle
Kal orada göz peteğinden
Damlayan bal bakışınla
“I am charmed,” I said; this phrase was in order to express the degree of my impression. I could also say, “I admired, very moved” or “wonderful, magnificent, extraordinary” instead of this. This was the answer I gave to my journalist friend who asked what did I think after walking around the place where Leonardo da Vinci spent his last years and the park integrated with this place.
Magic was a supernatural force; because it is believed in latent power of alchemist, magician, and shaman; charmed is the person who is under the illusion of them. The expression of “charmed” borrowed from here, was of course the statement of deep impression felt in the face of science and art even love. Through his life, Leonardo had grappled with nature and life, not with the supernatural. What he made and did as a result of this, namely creative human imagination turning life into an object of design as yet during sixteenth century, had significantly contributed to great human culture. One could not help not to be impressed in this context. I was faced with objects and creations touched, shaped by a genius five hundred years ago, I was among them. Every object meeting with its own image was there as an answer to life and time. What Leonardo did and made was a letter written to us from that century. A letter that demands an answer. As an answer to his letter, more than twenty people from Turkey, as painter, sculptor, documentarist, journalist and writer, we were there. Every one of us was in emotion, inspiration and excitement. I guess we put our first sentences into our minds when we were just there, thinking how to form a common letter on the way back I was thinking the inadequacy of defining Leonardo just as a painter or mechanic. This was a duet of art and science; in the horizon of imagination where they fly together, life was whispering the music of changeability through leaps. I was forcing my mind in order to hear, touch and thus understand. In the exterior reportedly designed by Leonardo, while wandering among mechanic devices, bridges, bird box, water streams under artificial mist clouds, we were also listening to music composed by him from speakers hidden in trees. Rain was not breaking this silence, drizzling as we say it.
Leonardo was a persona of Renaissance. He was one of the people who laid the ground for reality that can be aroused in human mind by science and art together. However many designs were half finished, not completed. Every work incomplete, whether in the realm of science or art, is a source of inspiration for the future, a call to one who would finish it. Had Leonardo thought like this? I don’t think so. But we can think like this today. His genius was sort of turning into an adventure of a frivolous mind. Frivolous mind is messy, makes a mess, dissatisfaction of desire of self-realization in every area. Therefore, it is okay to see Leonardo as a person who did not yield to perfection, who reproduced the perfect by dissolving it.

Leonardo’s drawings, pages of notes with his reverse writing, mechanical gears, theatre stage and seats he enlightened, carpets on the wall, paintings: everything was being watched by interested people. Brochures prepared in many languages except Turkish were given to the audience together with tickets. The guide was explaining the characteristics of the painting in detail to the crowd piled up in front of a perfect reproduction of Mona Lisa painting. Just there, my mind went back to the years when I was a student back in the early 1970s. Our history o f art teacher had explained to us the Mona Lisa painting in awe as smacking his lips. After explaining it at length like this guide here, he painted in glowing colours the story of bringing of Mona Lisa from Italy to France through mountains on a mule as if he was accompanying the painting in this adventure. Every word in his mouth was like souring drops of honey. I had felt like that. That year I had written a poem including that mountain trip as I internalized the story our teacher told us. I had named the poem Honey Sour as dedicated to the words of our teacher. I thought finishing this text with this poem.
HONEY SOUR
By challenging time
God and love
You had nailed onto your canva The mystery of a pallet earth
As purified with your sight
Your look
Shortens other loves
Puts into dervish convent
Make it prostrate
Your look is an unreachable distance
A cynical smile settled down
To the traitor folding of your lip Hypocrite
Contemptuous
And in love
Obviously you are cold though you don’t show it
Put your cloak on your shoulders with your hands
Your hands weave in the loom of time
All sorts of love
All sorts of kindness and sadness
Your horizon is misty and resentfu Never rises the sun
Never will
Like it is the time of
Middle ages all the time
Than the big migration to the North
As passing through high mountains in your heart Exhilaration like seasickness
And bitter taste of partings
You had sadly watched the land of sorrow
You have become a bitter drop of tear
In some climates
Entered into fairy tales in other place Hidden like kisses
Into meanings secret as nights
And you are a lasting lover
In an imaginary rear of a veil
To be stayed imaginary without getting ol They say still in that lands of dream
You are a honey sour
For honey from the mountains is sour
Sour is the taste of splits
Now you with your twisted heart
Stay there with your honey look
Dropping from eye comb
